Four Key Approaches to Comprehensive App Localization Testing

Testlio
January 5th, 2024

Customers today have high expectations for their digital experiences. They want their apps to be culturally relevant, device-aligned, and intuitive. As a result, global brands must go beyond simple translations for app localization testing to offer a great user experience worldwide.

Localization testing includes different aspects, such as user interface (UI), functionality, and linguistic testing. However, effective localization goes further than getting the language right. It’s about adapting digital experiences to fit users’ language, location, and cultural preferences to capture a culture’s essence.

In this blog, we’ll focus on four comprehensive app localization testing components and how they impact user experiences.

1. Plan for Localization During Development

Localization provides a competitive advantage to increase customer acquisition and retention. However, delivering an effective app experience for varying markets while staying true to your brand can be challenging.

Localization testing is crucial for adapting a product to meet users’ cultural, social, visual, and linguistic needs in a specific location. It’s essential to start the localization process early in the development stage. This early consideration makes it easier to adapt the software’s user experience (UX) and UI to the target market, which, in turn, minimizes costs.

Teams should proactively identify potential pain points across different contexts, languages, cultural preferences, and regional nuances. Focusing on UI design, cultural references, and legal requirements ensures the app offers a tailored experience, not just translations.

As a best practice, your localization strategy should define the countries or regions you want to focus on, which variables you should target (i.e., content or product localization), and key performance indicators (KPIs).

2. The Importance of Real-world Testing

Another critical aspect of successful app localization testing is to gather feedback from real users in different locations through function and UI/UX testing. Testing the app on various devices and operating systems in the intended locations is crucial. Real-world, or “in the wild,” testing helps craft engaging end-user experiences that resonate with the user’s location, language, and cultural preferences.

Additionally, diving into the customer journey experience ensures the app is not just localized but provides an immersive experience tailored to specific audiences.

A real-world approach to function and UI/UX testing aligns the app with the intricacies of user expectations across various regions for a seamless customer experience.

3. Safeguard Success with Regression Testing

Regression testing is a critical aspect of ensuring flawless app experiences. As new features and functionalities undergo continuous refinement, software updates could unintentionally impact localized versions. To mitigate this, localization teams must synchronize efforts with product management and engineering to align their efforts with the roadmap and conduct thorough regression testing.

Regression testing minimizes the risks of failed changes implemented to fix a bug and the side effects of a change that resulted in a bug. It helps keep documentation—like test results and test cases—up to date, lowers technical support costs, and reduces the chance of defects resulting from code changes.

Regression testing acts as a safeguard by implementing updates seamlessly and guarding against unintended consequences, ensuring that every enhancement contributes to, rather than detracts from, the app’s integrity.

4. Commit to Continuous Improvement

In addition to functional and UI/UX testing, testing in real-world scenarios for continuous improvement is essential. Successful localization requires in-field testing to address any issues that may have gone unnoticed promptly. This process triggers a continuous improvement cycle, enabling brands to reflect on missed elements and adjust their approach accordingly.

Continuous “shift right” testing is critical to localization maturity and success. It involves ongoing testing of released software and helps teams gather feedback from the field. Teams must act on this feedback promptly, as resolving localization issues quickly is crucial to maintaining customer satisfaction.

Achieving Excellence in App Localization Testing

Successful app localization testing hinges on careful planning during development, real-world user testing, thorough regression checks, and a steadfast commitment to continuous improvement. Together, these elements help ensure a seamless user experience that resonates with different cultures across the globe. By taking a comprehensive approach to app localization testing, brands can effectively navigate regional nuances and provide their users with valuable app experiences, regardless of where they are in the world.
