Founded in 2011, BitPay is one of the longest-operating cryptocurrency companies, pioneering blockchain-based payments and financial tools for businesses and consumers. BitPay enables organizations to accept and send cryptocurrency with real-time conversion, flexible settlement, no chargeback risk, and global reach. For individuals, the BitPay Wallet is a self-custody app that lets users buy, store, swap, sell, and spend cryptocurrency, bringing real-world utility and portfolio management together in one place.

The Challenge

As BitPay continued to expand its global crypto payments and wallet platform, the company faced growing pressure to release new features quickly and reliably. However, without an internal QA team, testing responsibilities were assigned to its already-stretched development and product teams. Limited personnel meant inconsistent test coverage and growing bottlenecks. These issues were compounded by the fact that BitPay’s core team is based in the United States, while its user base spans more than 200 countries and territories. Without global in-market testing, the company lacked the coverage and device diversity needed to ensure a reliable experience for all customers.

BitPay needed a scalable, expert QA solution that could extend its team, broaden test coverage, and ensure consistent product quality across markets.

Solution

Without having to build out an internal QA team, BitPay chose Testlio for its ability to pair deep crypto expertise with flexible, global testing at scale. Testlio provided the planning rigor, tester coverage, and execution support needed to reduce risk and validate complex crypto payment experiences across consumer and merchant flows.

End-to-end testing

The complexity of testing BitPay’s cryptocurrency applications started at the planning and orchestration level, due to the irreversible and immutable nature of blockchain transactions. Once a transaction is submitted and confirmed, it cannot be rolled back like a traditional card payment. To mitigate this risk, Testlio designed structured test workflows that validated address accuracy, network selection, fee calculations, and transaction intent before submission, reducing the chance of costly errors during execution.

Additionally, third-party providers for buy-and-sell flows introduced more complexity. Because BitPay supports multiple blockchains, asset types, and network layers, each with its own distinct rules, fees, and failure modes, these variables significantly expanded the test matrix and required careful coordination to ensure consistent coverage.

Testlio helped BitPay build test plans that accounted for network variability and blockchain state, including factors such as congestion, fluctuating transaction fees, and unpredictable confirmation times. By combining strong QA expertise with deep knowledge of crypto and blockchain fundamentals, Testlio designed effective test strategies, managed these constraints, and helped BitPay validate critical transaction flows with confidence.

Crowdsourced Testing

Testlio’s crowdsourced testing model was essential for executing this strategy across a globally distributed user base. The platform enabled access to testers in multiple regions, helping BitPay validate geo-specific restrictions, compliance enforcement, and regional availability without disrupting legitimate user flows.

Because crypto wallets and transactions introduce unique risks, such as wallet connection failures, signing prompts, session expiration, and permission scopes, Testlio sourced testers capable of validating real-world wallet interactions across different environments. Testers were fully enabled to complete end-to-end flows that required extensive setup, including account creation, KYC verification, payment method linking, and compliance checks, all while navigating regional and banking limitations.

When provider or regional constraints limited coverage, Testlio was able to pivot quickly and maintain momentum. This flexible, global approach ensured reliable validation of both BitPay’s wallet functionality and third-party transaction flows across markets.

“Testlio is a fantastic partner! We love the flexibility we have when planning and executing.”

Crypto Payments Testing

On the BitPay Wallet mobile app, Testlio implemented smoke tests to validate core functionality and conducted transaction testing up to payment completion. Given the immutability of blockchain transactions and the lack of automatic refunds, real transactions were tested manually to ensure accuracy, intent, and reliability.

Testing accounted for multiple networks, asset types, and dynamic blockchain conditions, including variable fees and confirmation times. Automated scripts supported broader coverage, while manual testing ensured critical paths, such as wallet connections, transaction signing, and payment confirmation, were validated under real-world conditions.

This hybrid approach allowed BitPay to reduce risk while confidently supporting cryptocurrency payments at global scale.

Web Testing

Testlio also supported BitPay with targeted merchant testing, conducted exclusively on the web in staging and test environments. BitPay provided a dedicated staging entry point for generating invoices, which testers used to connect crypto wallets and validate merchant payment flows.

The setup involved a high level of technical sophistication, requiring workflows tailored to BitPay’s staging infrastructure and merchant-specific requirements. Testers validated invoice creation, wallet connections, and payment completion flows within the constraints of the staging environment. This approach provided confidence in core merchant flows without requiring full production-level validation, while allowing BitPay to maintain focus on higher-volume consumer experiences across global markets.
