Meet a Tester: Dina

Kristel Kruustük , Kristel is Testlio's co-founder.
January 9th, 2018

In Meet a Tester, we feature QA experts from our community who share their love for quality and Testlio. Dina is an outstanding tester from Lviv, Ukraine who has been with us since 2015.

How did you end up testing for Testlio?

I had been working on different platforms but felt that something was off. So I  looked around for something else. At some point, I found Testlio, passed the initial test cycle and was invited to my very first client project. I still can remember that particular project and the Team Lead who led it 🤗. It was great; I felt a huge difference compared to my previous experience – very detailed task list, project description, and the support from the team! I didn’t feel alone with my questions and I got quick answers when chatting with other testers in the project chat. In time I ended up working only with Testlio and now I don’t want to change my team.

What was your testing experience before joining Testlio?

I didn’t have much industry experience. I had worked on different crowdsourced platforms for about six months but most of my knowledge in Software Testing I later gained from Testlio. And I am still learning new things on a regular basis:-). Testlio’s community is great, there are many people I love to work with and learn from.

What motivates you professionally?

Passion in what I’m doing. I always want more from myself; thus, when I feel that I’m not able to give enough, I try to change what I do. Actually, this is how I found myself in software testing. Previously I had tried different professions and even started again from the very beginning a few times because I felt that I reached a deadlock and needed a change.

With software testing, I can always learn something new, technologies are continuously evolving and I’m progressing with them.

Working on quality assurance is very rewarding – as quality makes sense for me in many aspects of my life. So when I find an interesting and valuable bug for a client, I’m happy. It’s a great feeling to be able to help improve software so that the end-user won’t have to face any issue.

What are the pros and cons of remote work?

There are no cons for me. I can only list pros!

First of all, it’s a flexible schedule – you have the freedom to organize your day; you save a lot of time since you don’t have to go to the office every day; between cycles you can do something around the house, like being with your family, doing something you love – play the piano for example 🙂

Moreover, it gives me an opportunity to work while traveling. I enjoy visiting different cities and countries, but I also love testing and can’t be without my work for too long. Therefore, remote work is like the freedom that you can give to yourself.

How do you manage the balance between testing and personal life?

Oh, it’s very easy for me now. Back in the old days, I spent too much time in and out offices or on business trips and wasn’t able to spend much time with my family.

Now everything has changed. I can work at home and be there for my family. I can schedule my time for everything and it’s great!

How to become a good freelance tester?

First of all, you need to be passionate about what you do – testing. Working from home requires self-organization, and when you really love your profession this does not become a problem.

Besides, each time you perform a cycle well, the feeling you get is extremely satisfying!

I always keep in mind that many people worked very hard before getting an invitation to the cycle. We work hard as a team at each stage, so it’s important to respect each team member and do a quality job.

How would you convince a friend to join Testlio?

Testlio is a good place for both newbies and experienced testers. The community here is excellent, there are many different exciting projects, and working as a tester gives great opportunities to grow professionally. Additionally, it’s possible to get some extra income working partially. If a person is self-motivated, then Testlio will suit them. As I already said, it’s like giving freedom to your life – you can choose how your work and life balance.
