In Meet a Tester, we feature QA experts from our network who share their love for quality and Testlio. A former pro athlete and research analyst from India, Jyoti is now a work-from-home tester living in sunny California with her husband and son.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I am from a remote village in Bihar, one of India’s poorest states. Girls there have seldom access to education so not many have the privilege to study. But thankfully, I was very lucky to have a supporting father by my side who made it possible for me to pursue my dreams.
My native language is Hindi, and I can also speak English and Marathi. I currently live in California, USA, with my husband and a super active two-year-old toddler.
What is your educational background?
When I was growing up back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, my district Saran (which happens to be the hometown of India’s first president) was strictly against sending girls to school. So my father used to dress me in boy clothes so that I could attend classes. I managed to complete my elementary schooling at the village school and even cracked the entrance exam of a highly reputed boarding school – JNV Saran. Even though students there were given full scholarships by the government, my father had to actually fight with many family members and people from my village just so he could send me to that school. He never backed down and supported me all the way.
Fast forward to today, I now hold a master’s degree in Business administration with a specialization in Management Information Systems. In addition, I also have a certification in Business Analytics.
How did you end up testing for Testlio?
Before coming to the US, I was working as a Research Analyst in New Delhi. But after we relocated and I had my child, I didn’t work for a while. I was suffering from postpartum depression and was looking for ways to overcome my depressing thoughts and sense of hopelessness. So I started looking for job opportunities.
Through my husband’s job (he works for an artificial intelligence company in the autonomous driving field), I knew about manual and automation testing – and sought to expand my practical knowledge. I started taking online classes, watching videos, etc. Ultimately, I felt prepared to apply for testing jobs, and that’s when a friend of mine introduced me to Testlio. I joined the next day and I’ve never been depressed since then.
Testlio basically pulled me out of the black hole I had sunk in and gave me back a measure of purpose. The best thing about Testlio is its community and the connections I get to make while working with teammates around the world.
What are your specialties?
I enjoy analytics testing and working with Xcode and Android Studio.
How does Testlio’s pay compare to your market rate?
Well, I tried to work on a freelance platform doing some business analysis projects but never got paid. But Testlio is my first testing platform and I love it – the pay is pretty fair and I am happy with that.
How do you balance testing and personal life?
I work from home while raising a toddler so I strive to find a good balance between my testing workload and personal life. It really helps that the Testlio platform provides a lot of flexibility in terms of managing schedules and availabilities. My husband is extremely supportive as well – he is my pillar of strength whenever I need it.
What motivates you professionally?
I am extremely conscious of the fact that the apps we test are used by millions of people. So it motivates me to excel and help deliver the best products possible.
What’s an interesting fact about yourself?
I was a national level athlete in long-distance running, the javelin, shot put (bronze medalist), and discus throw in India. Additionally, I was one of the top-level State players in Basketball, Volleyball, Kabaddi, and Kho kho games. I have more than one hundred medals and trophies (of which 70+ are gold medals). I have represented my State three times at National level Athletics meets.
What are some of your favorite apps?
My favorite apps are Amazon, Instagram, and Youtube. These apps are used by millions of users and perform amazingly well.
How would you convince a friend to join Testlio?
I have already convinced several friends to join the Testlio platform and they are very happy to be here as well. They love being involved in all the interesting projects and having great hourly pay. Testlio is an amazing place that allows you to connect with many awesome, talented, and hardworking people.
